About

Stehli Howell Design was founded by siblings, Sarah Howell and Hunt Stehli, to create sustainable and socially conscious design. SHD offers architectural design services as well as consulting in the areas of space planning, sustainable strategies, and historic preservation. Projects are produced in the 3D modeling software Revit (BIM) so that both clients and builders can visualize the end result from schematic design through construction documents.

Sarah Howell has a degree in Architecture & Urban Design from Yale University and lived in almost every region of the country before settling in the mountains of North Carolina. She became an advocate for affordable, sustainable housing while working for organizations such as Make It Right and Project Home Again in post-Katrina New Orleans, and teaching at Tulane School of Architecture. Sarah lives in a 100+ year-old house in the Montford Historic District of Asheville with her husband and three sons, and spends her free time playing and coaching ultimate frisbee.

Hunt Stehli has a bachelors degree in the History of Art from Northwestern University (1985) and a Masters of Architecture from the Boston Architectural College (2023). These two milestones bookend a long career as a serial entrepreneur into which he injected design at every opportunity.

While his first architectural collaboration with his much younger (but much more qualified) sister was in 2010, he has worked independently and in collaboration with her since 2021, completing designs for additions, renovations and new houses in Maine, New Hampshire, North Carolina and California.

When not in front of his laptop, he can most often be found sailing an old wooden boat in Maine.
