<image:caption>As project architect for Brad Pitt’s Make It Right Foundation, Sarah Howell collaborated with internationally renowned architects and the Lower 9th Ward community in the construction of more than 80 LEED Platinum houses. Over a four year process, Sarah refined 21 different prototypes for a sustainable, affordable house and she continues to develop prototypes to this day.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Sarah Howell, as Project Architect for Williams Architects, designed the prototypes for Phase VI of Project Home Again. These 10 houses were the only in the project to receive LEED Platinum certification. Sarah developed three unique prototypes for the project all of which employed these sustainable design strategies: a supertight building envelope of Steel Structural Insulated Panels (SSIP) by Oceansafe, standing seam metal roofing, insulated windows and glass doors, PV solar panels, a highly efficient HVAC system and low-VOC finishes.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Salcedo</image:title>
<image:caption>This house is about the simple beauty of wood, brick and stone, and a deep love of New Orleans vernacular architecture. The house was restored to the original Neoclassical Revival style that had been corrupted in a 1930's renovation, and it is sustainable in the truest sense of the word because it combines classic beauty and state-of-the-art green technologies. The house is highly insulated with a combination of cellulose and foam, has an efficient HVAC and lighting system and a 4kW array of solar panels (with battery back-up for hurricane preparedness). Every door in the house was found and restored including massive pocket doors in the master suite, the floors are reclaimed oak with a pickled finish. All three brick chimneys were re-pointed and salvaged brick was re-used for the patio and master bath wall. Parker Construction, the general contractor, proved to be a team of craftsmen and problem solvers.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This was an extensive renovation of a magnificent 1890 double shotgun in the historic Bayou Saint John neighborhood. As this project was done remotely, SHD worked closed with local architect, Kelly Johnson and general contractor Dragan Segvic to adjust to all the surprises one finds when taking apart and putting back together a 125 year-old house. Wood salvaged from the walls we demolished was utilized in three ways: barge board shelving and record boxes, custom cabinetry frames by Conner Millworks and vaulted ceiling details at the new master suite and screened porch.</image:caption>

All other materials were sourced sustainably, including the reclaimed cypress for the exposed beams of the front porch and the reclaimed oak floors. The house has a solar hot water system, which provides heat for the backyard pool, and a highly efficient heating and air conditioning system, which operates on only 2 tons despite the home’s generous footprint and 11-foot ceilings.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Stehli Howell Design was invited by Cygnette LLC to design a renovation and addition for this much-loved property in New Orleans' Lower Garden District. With the help of talented builder, Dragan Segvic, the original house was restored to its 1850's splendor and a two-story Great Room and Master Suite was added. SHD also designed a screened porch, rooftop terrace and pool-house detailed with replicas of the columns, brackets and balustrade original to the house. This ample outdoor space, along with the formal rose garden allows the NOLA spring, fall and winter to be fully enjoyed. In summertime, the 14' ceilings and 9' French doors wrapping the Great Room create an escape from the heat.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This building was designed by Legerton Architecture with Sarah Howell serving as Project Architect. The owners were a family of 5 who wanted a mountain escape that made minimal impact on the land (less than 2,000 SF for 3 en-suite bedrooms and a shared common area), and utilized sustainable systems and natural materials. They worked with the Legerton team, led by Sarah, and Jeff Shuler of Evergreen Builders to design and construct a building that was not only energy efficient and beautiful, but integrated into its microclimate - a mountainous rainforest.</image:caption>

<image:caption>From 2015 - 2022, Sarah served as a founding Board member of Pee Wee Homes, a group of peers and colleagues who came together to be a part of answering the glaring call for deeply affordable housing in their community. Sarah designed the 10 units that have been built so far, and continues to serve on the PWH design and building committee, working toward optimizing her prototype and exploring various construction technologies (everything from panelizing to 3D printing!!!) that could increase the scale of production without sacrificing quality.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - Contemporary Cabin</image:title>
<image:caption>This project was designed by Legerton Architecture with Sarah Howell as the Project Architect. Sarah was initially approached by Jeff Shuler of Evergreen Builders, who was working with a family of 5 who wanted a mountain escape that would make minimal impact on the land (3 bedroom suites in less than 2,000 SF), while utilizing sustainable systems and natural materials. Jeff initially sought us out to help develop the optimal building envelope for this micro-climate, but the collaboration went so well that we ended up designing the whole house and site together. Capitalizing on the mild climate of the North Carolina mountains, the open living, dining, and kitchen space expands onto covered and uncovered deck space through 16’ wide telescoping doors. The result of this intentional design and construction process is a building that is fully integrated into the temperate rain forest that surrounds it.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - Lakeside Retreat</image:title>
<image:caption>Sarah and Hunt’s first collaboration was a lakeside retreat for a wonderful woman who was choosing to downsize her life. Leaving behind her career and her large house in New England, she wanted a modest cottage on the banks of a lake in Appalachia where she could live peacefully throughout the year, and occasionally welcome friends and family for extended visits. We carefully sited the house so that it would blend into the forest that surrounds the lake and be just barely visible from the water. A massive shed dormer, allows natural light to pour in and frames views of the lake for the lofted bedrooms. The screened porch, the favored gathering space in the mild North Carolina climate, claims the prime corner of the site, with stadium steps cascading down toward the water. A clerestory bay on windows allows light from the dormer into the living room, and of course. It was a joy to work as an owner-architect team on every detail - from the kitchen window view to the perfect Christmas tree spot.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Cheyenne is a truly sustainable, modern design. The east-west orientation and south-facing single-pitch roof allow for a 5KwH solar array to power the house. Efficient at 2000 SF, glass is maximized on the southern-facade, but protected by a 4-foot overhang, which causes the house to be filled with natural light. High ceilings and an open plan highlight the simple beauty of polished concrete, clear-coated oak, exposed steel and glass.</image:caption>
